The Gender Studies Unit (Núcleo de Estudos de Gênero) of the University of Campinas (Sao Paulo, Brazil) has functioned since 1993 as an academic space for interdisciplinary discussions and research to stimulate reflections on gender. The research activities, which are academic in nature, bring together experts that carry out studies in a variety of disciplinary traditions and include a number of issues viewed from differing theoretical perspectives. Lines of research include sexuality, history of science, course of life, education, communications media, distribution of justice and feminist theory.

The transfer of knowledge is done by means of conferences, seminars, debates and periodical publications. The Nucleus also has specialized bibliographical resources that are available to the public and can be consulted on-line.

Some examples of the work carried out at PAGU-UNICAMP are as follows:

Project on gender and citizenship, tolerance and the distribution of justice (Phases I and II). The project had for its main subject the way in which justice is administered and the consolidation of citizen’s rights.
Seminar on Gender and Citizenship: 2000
Seminar on Gender and Citizenship: October 2002
Seminar on Crimes of Honour: August 2004

Publications and other materials regarding violence against women and Women’s Police Stations:

Founded in 1993, Cadernos Pagu, one of the major Brazilian journals focusing on gender, publishes theoretical and methodological reflections, research results, documents and reviews approached from different theoretical perspectives written by both Brazilian and foreign contributors. Articles on some of the major themes published in the journal – labour, education, violence, sexuality, family, race, feminist and gender theory – have contributed to debate in the academic domain and offered support to governmental and non-governmental organizations and public policy formulation.

The research focuses on the women’s police stations (WPS) that attend to minorities that are discriminated against, in particular women and the elderly. By means of ethnographic studies carried out at WPS in municipalities in the interior of the state of São Paulo and the city of Salvador, in Bahia, the project studied (1) the place the WPS occupy within the security system; (2) the relative success achieved by the WPS when compared to other specialised police stations; (3) relations between WPD and social movements and civil society organisations; and (4) the degree of trust the WPS have gained among the public.

As part of the aforementioned project, an international seminar titled “Family Life” took place, based on Mariza Correa’s book “Family Death”, published twenty years ago and in which the author studies how the judicial system deals with trials for murder among couples. This book reflects the outcome of the seminar, at which international researchers also participated by contributing to a comparative panel on the situation regarding crimes of honour in different countries.
